Requesting information on a Musima Resonata (730?)

Beitrag von Boothy99 »

Hello,
Firstly, apologies for writing in English, (my home country).

I recently bought a neglected Musima Resonata (I believe the label has the number "730" attached to it) from a charity shop for £15. There was some separation at the base of the neck and at the juntion of neck & body, which I have glued with Titebond. I have been careful to keep all original parts while attempting to bring the guitar back to playability, which it currently is. I have also made a bone saddle from a blank, as a previous owner had installed a basic plastic one which was indented by the strings (the blanks I had were not the full width of the bridge, unfortunately, but should do for now). The fretboard was extremely dry, with oxidized frets that were loose and came out from the slots. I have cleaned and very carefully glued these back, which has hopefully corrected both their looks and improved the action somewhat. They sound "solid" now, when I gently tap them - as opposed to a "hollow" sound, before. The fretboard is now oiled with a fretboard oil.

Unfortunately, one screw was mssing from a cog in the machine head tuner. I have found a modern screw with an exact thread, but this needed a small washer as the screw head was much smaller than the original. I am currently on the look-out for an (original) screw that can replace the current one. If anyone knows where I might find one or is able to tell me what the identification name/number of the screw is, - I would be very grateful.

I am thrilled to play this piece of history, and when both myself and anyone else has hears it played - say that the guitar sounds beautiful ...the guitar tone, ....not necessarily my playing

I would like to know when the guitar was made, if possible. Was it around the 1970's?
Also, could anyone kindly tell me from what woods is it constructed. My belief from what little information I have found so far, is that it has Flame Maple laminate back and sides, and possibly a top of Spruce?.

Whatever it is made of, it sounds truly beautiful. As someone described, it certainly has bell-like trebbles and meaty basses. A very full sound indeed.

I have taken photos that might help, as I have worked carefully on this lovely guitar. Hopefully I am not breaking any forum rules by posting a link to the album?

Thank you all in advance,
Best regards,
Dave Booth.

I've just managed to take a couple of close-up shots of the edge of the sound hole (added them to the end of the photo album). It looks like laminate to me, which has no effect on my love for the guitar :rose:

I'm sure most people (unlike myself) are fully capable of reading other languages, but hopefully I'll not insult anyone, and possibly help some if I post a Google Translation. I'm sure it will have grammatical errors, but here it is. No insult intended! ....

"Hallo,

Hi Dave, I don't think language is the issue, this forum is extremely inactive so to say, it takes a long time until somebody answers at all. There are many knowlegeable people here but I also don't know why it is so difficult to get reliable information about Musima guitars. A lot of employees from Musima are still alive it simply takes somebody to interview them and to collect the info... Anyway, take a mirror and with luck you find a date insode the bracing on the top. I would guess your Resonata is even from the 80ies and not from the 70ies. Sometimes you find two stamps, one when the body was assembled and one when the guitar was finished.
I believe the Resonata is made from laminated wood, hence it is a bit heavy. They were pretty good guitars for the money.

Hi Ralf,
Many thanks for your reply! I'll hunt out a mirror tomorrow and try to take a look inside. I appreciate the tip.Would never have thought about looking there.

I agree with you about the guitar being pretty good  I just love the way it sounds, now it's back to being playable again. Do you own a Resonata too?

Cheers.
Dave.

No I don't. I have a 1968 or 1969 Musima "Pepita" which was an export model probably made for Sweden based on either a Musima No. 1612 or a Musima No. 1672. It's only 7/8 size. And it was shipped with steel strings at that time. All laminated wood. There's rumor of a book about the history of Musima guitars coming out in later 2020.

I found a bit more info regarding the "Resonata" model! There is a page dedicated to 50 years of "Institut für Musikinstrumentenbau" (Institute of Musical Instrument Making) in Zwota/Vogtland in year 2001. https://www.ifm-zwota.de/i50jahre.htm

"From 1971 to 1976, researchers from the IfM, together with specialists from MUSIMA, developed the RESONATA series of guitars. It consisted of seven models. The instruments were characterized by excellent sound quality. Thus, the resonance area and frame height were optimized by analyzing the frequency curve as well as by volume measurements in extensive test series. Changes in the dimensioning of the soundhole and the resonance chamber led from the depths to the highest registers to sound balanced instruments. Substantial progress was also made in terms of playing technique. The result proved to be extremely successful on the market."

Many thanks again, Ralf !!!
I've just visited the page(s) from your link, read and saved the information. All the research done by the Institute for Musical Instrument Making & Musima team, certainly paid off. They produced a truly lovely set of instruments to play. I feel even more attached to my Resonata, having read all of that. I really appreciate your time in sending me that and for the translation too ;-)

I'll keep a look out for the upcoming book too, thanks.

Very best wishes to you!
Cheers,
Dave.
